Okay, so I was just fucking around with Google Ride Finder, which may or may not be an April Fool's joke. I was wandering around the map of Chicago, and came across the intersection of Wells and Ontario. That's where Gino's is, and now that I thought about it I'm really mad. It's obviously too late for this weekend, but I am totally up for ordering in the next couple of days if you two are in. Portillos also has online ordering. Shit be expensive, and it won't taste as good as being there, but damn. Well, a hundred bucks for four pizzas isn't too bad when you consider what we'd spend in the restaurant. Of course, I think the pizzas you can order online are mediums, and we'd get booze in restaurant, but that's cheaper at home anyway. Plus, if we have any leftovers, we don't need to track down a homeless guy to offload it.

There seems to be a general consensus on the Bimmerfest forums that this is a pretty good radar detector. I also saw it advertised in at least one of my BMW magazines. This one has also gotten some praise, but people who have tried either just the V1 or both seem to be in love with the arrows system that the V1 has. Neither is exactly cheap ($300-400), but not quite $1000, either.

I also came across this article that you might find interesting. At least, I did, since it helped explain shit to me that I didn't understand like what the fuck a final drive ratio is. Well, kind of. It sounds like final drive ratio depends on what gear you're in, since according to the article final drive = axle ratio * gear ratio. Data sheets tend to list just one "final drive ratio" spec, so I don't know if this is final drive for one gear, if it's actually the axle ratio, or if they can somehow keep final drive ratio constant over gears.

Confusion aside, I do like the fact that the article has me doing some (simple) math to understand how all this shit fits together.

I think I'm slowly getting the hang of heel-and-toe cornering. I think it'll be awhile before I can mix in double-clutching with it -- right now I have to keep the clutch in while I'm rev-matching (you can also do this with regular downshifts, but it's not as good as doing the rev-matching with the clutch pedal out since, as I understand it, not having it out doesn't bring one of the shafts up to speed).

I don't know how much this will help on your car with normal every-day turns you encounter since your gearbox has much closer ratios, but it's nice when I can do it right and fly through something like a 90-degree turn with the car in gear. Otherwise, I either have to slow down to where I'm nearly crawling since there's an unpleasant kickback when going into second if I'm moving too fast or I have to leave it out of gear. Of course, it'll be useful for any time I'm making a turn that requires braking, but regular left- and right-hand turns are the ones I hit most, and I'm sick of taking them so awkwardly.

The thing that was really holding me back was I wasn't sure when I should be doing the shifting. I realized that the exact timing of it doesn't matter, just so long as I'm in gear before the turn is done (otherwise I'm defeating the purpose) and what I'm doing follows the cardinal rule of "don't upset the balance of the car" (right before I test that balance by taking a fast turn).

I know it's pretty obvious -- the balance thing -- but for some reason just realizing why I'm doing all of this really helped things click.

Okay, so it's over. Cable is gone. Well, not entirely.

Cumcast gives you a $10 discount on your internet service if you have both cable internet and any cable TV package. The cost of basic cable? About ten bucks. Since it ends up being the same price every month anyway, I kept the basic but gave up digital.

I get pretty much all of the local channels, and a handful of others. I don't know what I'll do without CNN and Fox News now. There's some news channel that barely comes in through the static, but I can't even tell which one it is. Either way, I don't want to have to watch shit through the static like I did freshman year with Days. That cured me of soaps, and hopefully this will cure me of (watching) shitty punditry and shitty media coverage. Maybe I'll start mixing in some C-Span.

But hey, you know what comes in perfectly? MTV2! That's right, no matter who you are and what you're paying for, you can get MTV2 in your home. It's actually part of the basic channel lineup. At least one of our three channels is still around to give us something to do on weekends. They had better play that fucking Ludacris video.

Alright, we were talking about script writing last night. Perl is one of the languages I use the most, and it's pretty easy to learn. The book I mentioned that's a good source for learning Perl is, cleverly enough, Learning Perl. It's fairly short, but a good intro. And, of course, you can always just go running around online and find some tutorials. Once you get going, you might want to bust out what's considered to be the Perl Bible, Programming Perl (one of its authors, Larry Wall, is the guy who created Perl). I use this book quite a bit as it has a list of all of Perl's built-in functions and how to use them.

In addition to Perl, I write a decent number of shell scripts. Each shell has its own scripting language with its own syntax and shit, but a lot of them are pretty similar. I'm (naturally) most familiar with Bash scripting language, but not all that familiar. I've found shell script syntax to be a bit cantankerous (like, for example, whitespace matters in some places), and I usually just write small shell scripts that just run a bunch of commands but are too complex to just be made into an alias. Every now and then I'll bust out some kind of programming style construct like a for loop, but usually if I'm getting marginally complex I'll just go the Perl route. As far as my knowledge of shell scripting goes, most of it I've just picked up by example, but you could also get something like Learning the Bash Shell (the cover picture on BN's site is wrong, BTW, but that's the book I have) if you want a reference.

As a side note, I'm actually migrating away from Bash right now, which is what I've used for years since that's the Linux default. I've been using Zsh at home and work, which is Bash-like enough that I don't notice a huge difference, but it has some cool features that I like (most notably with tab-completion) which, as far as I know, Bash doesn't have.
